Glider Hire

For visiting pilots, Southern Soaring has a range of modern and well-maintained gliders available for you to hire - both dual and solo.  To make it less confusing, we keep our pricing structure simple.  All amounts given here are in New Zealand dollars. To convert into another currency, please click here.

Dual

The cheapest option for casual visiting pilots is to hire either our Duo Discus or Twin Astir at the following rates (minimum two hours hire).

Duo Discus
NZ$180.00 per hour*
Twin Astir
NZ$125.00 per hour* dual
* Our glider hire prices are inclusive of the 5% Omarama Airfield Levy

For overseas pilots flying dual, you are not required to be affiliated to Gliding New Zealand and are therefore not required to pay any affiliation fees.  Tow fees are additional to the hourly rate. To be eligible for the above rates, you will need to bring proof of membership of your home club.  There is no additional charge for our friendly instructors!

Flying Solo or as Pilot-In-Command (PIC)

For those flying with Southern Soaring, we do not charge a "membership" fee (up to NZ$450.00 elsewhere!), nor do we charge for coffee, tea or access to weather information, the internet, etc.  All these services are FREE!

If flying solo, however, or acting as pilot-in-command (PIC), you need to be affiliated to a New Zealand gliding club or be under the supervision of a Gliding New Zealand Commercial affiliate such as Southern Soaring. Because we have to pay a bulk affliliation fee to GNZ, overseas pilots (who are not a member of a New Zealand gliding club) are charged NZ$195.00 to help recover some of this cost.

Before flying as pilot-in-command, we will also need to see your logbook, club membership details and a medical declaration.  If a visiting pilot from overseas, a medical declaration from your home country is fine, as long as it is to a similar standard to that required by Gliding New Zealand. For details on this and a medical declaration form, please click the following link:

If you have not flown with us before, or are not current, you will need to do at least one check flight to a pre-determined standard.  That's all there is to it!

Daily rates for glider hire (tow fees are additional) are as follows:

ASW 28 (click on link below)
NZ$345.00
LS4
NZ$350.00

A refund of 50% is given if the aircraft is booked for a particular day but it was deemed unsoarable (nobody could stay up for one hour or more).

If you are lucky enough to have a wave flight where you require oxygen, there is an addional charge of NZ$35.00 per flight to cover replacement and servicing.  Further details on glider hire can be obtained by emailing us at:
